san francisco bay area guardian talk about luckyme

San Francisco Bay Guardian, June 08

Man, this podcast made a stink for us! Peace to San Fran for hearing and pushing us. Very, very cool. For the record, we are coming to you on this tour. See you July 3rd.

Here's what they said:

"... When I wrote about the glitchy-hoppy-droppy Lazer Bass phenomenon a few weeks back -- featuring local amazerz Lazer Sword -- I neglected to drop the name of hot Scot collective LuckyMe, who are def a big part of the up-and-coming scene.

But I'm glad I neglected, because I've been tripping out on LuckyMe's latest, mindbending mix for XLR8R... The mix goes way beyond the lazers and grime, into some grittily beautific territory for which there is yet no name. (I refuse to say "emotronic!" Refuse! And you can hear some more great LuckyMe tracks at their MySpace page.) It was put together by LuckyMe sub-duo The Blessings, aka Dom Sum and FineArt.

I can't imagine jumping around a dancefloor to any of this really, but my hands were in the air nonetheless -- it's been a long time since I got ravin' in the cubicle.

Especially nice touches on the XLR8R mix include Nadsroic's "Chemicals" (Nadsroic, a young singer from Glasgow, sounds a lot like deadpan jailbait mumbler-rapper Uffie, but with even less implied snideness to her voice -- and she actually sings on occasion, rather than sigh sweet profanities and work the autotune.)

Also pretty great is LuckyMe honcho Rustie's "resmack" of Keisha Cole's "Let You Go," and the opener -- Surface Emp's "Moonbeam Jars," which starts right out with the slurred line "I make dubstep for supermodels" amid a twitterpating wash of chiptune-glitchful delight. And, at the end, there's a nice shoutout to our boys Lazer Sword, as well as all the other touchstones of the Lazer Bass movement/ "

discobelle for rustie

Discobelle, June 08

Cerebral Vortex from 215:TFK submitted the Bird Petterson remix of Rustie and thems' Patrick Ewing to Discobelle and they gave it the main page calling him a' much hyped up Glasgowian producer'. Glasgowian - Glaswegian. That's Glaswegian. Act like you know.

We believe Discobelle is Swedish. We let them off for the reason that we completely understand that the world on large has never heard of Glasgow. 45% off the people who check this site are from the States. Why the hell would you know or care about Scotland, 'cept maybe recently because of, I don't know Mogwai? Our misrepresentation even extends to Talib Kweli on the Madlib produced 'Liberation' where he says

"...Rocking shows in Glasgow, Switz'land " - Say Whuut?

Anyways, good lookin 215. Good lookin Rusto.

xlr8r luckyme podcast

XLR8R, May 08

The Blessings - Dom Sum & FineArt made June's podcast for XlR8R and just managed to get away with filling up the tape with an hour of all ( save Samiyam and some Mochilla CD-Rs) our peoples music. Get it if you can...

Here's what they said:

"...If Scotland's LuckyMe collective is a little hard to define, that's only because they want to be. The group counts about twelve or so members, mostly beatmakers along with a few emcees and guest vocalists, who throw THE BALLER$ 5OCIAL CLUB monthly party at Glasgow School of Art. They broadcast a monthly radio show on Samurai.fm, have their hands on a couple streetwear and design projects, and are now becoming a label to release "slabs of the crew's most leftfield and obscure works." That doesn't mean they don't work with other labels - Hudson Mohawke is signed with Warp Records and the young rising star Rustie works with Ramp and Hyperdub - but anything LuckyMe wants to do, it does. So, if it's hard to put your finger on what exactly Lucky Me is, that's only because they've made it that way.

This mix, put together by The Blessings (a.k.a. Dom Sum & FineArt), is every bit as hard to describe as the group themselves. The 22 tracks flow from Scotland-repping mid-tempo verses to ass-shaking instrumental bangers followed by glitched out abstractions and some hot diva wailing. We're expecting a whole lot more from this crew soon, but listening to these tracks it's easy to hear the future right now." - Wyatt Williams

boomkat

Boomkat, March 08

Yeah. Motherfucking Hud Mo says Ooops! got single of the week on Boomkat.

Here's what they said:

Hudson Mohawke is a man on everyone's lips right now, a producer whose reputation is soaring ... This incredible twelve is his first release proper and is already one of those releases that absolutely everyone seems to be asking us about. We're extremely happy to say we FINALLY have it in stock and we don't expect copies to touch the sides as far as demand goes... reinterpretations that will no doubt wreak havoc in clubs across the land long after this measly pressing has disappeared into the ebay ether... Limited pressing - BUY!

the newyorker finds out about us and discusses lazer bass

The New Yorker, March 08

This was from a while back. Didn't even notice it till Mweslee forwarded it to us.

Thank you so much to Sasha Frere-Jones for our mention and joining in the what-the-fuck-do-we-label-this-shit debate.

I'm just sayin' you don't strictly have to label us something new. Hip Hop is a good term. Don't say lazer - cause that means Lazer Sword and they are our homeys - if you started calling this Lucky Bass they would hate it. Don't say glitch - cause Glitch Mob got that covered - and over here anyway glitch meant post ambient fall out electronica nerds in 1998. (chique nerds, but nerds none the less).

We get called nerds, but I'd argue we are more dweebs.

Oh, and the worst shit in the world is when people say Wonky! Please don't call it wonky. That is very lame.

You can tell who in our roster comes rom hip hop. Who comes from techno. Who comes from electro. Who comes from rock. We try to be honest to all the music we like and make. We are grateful to the press. Its very cool of the media to try push us this way but ever since the term bee bop people have been bashing words together to describe music. This is a post genre electronic music. We really love it all.

Fly Music blog, July 07

A download re-up of the Blessings vol.1 mixtape. 27,000 downloads if you include our site. Now please bare this in mind. This is not scandal, this is not inflammatory. This is fact. We coined this name ourselves. We upped this tape on July 20th. In December we picked up Size's instore magazine and saw that they are associated to a club called Faux Real who site influences in Shape of Broad Minds and Andrew Meza BTS. WTF? No beef, never. We tried to reach out on some 'no way!!' but got no reply or acknowledgement from either Size? or the Faux Real guys directly. We're not stating this to stir the water, just to discuss openly the notion of zeitgeist. Fauxrealtho?
